Bald Head Island Conservancy
The Conservancy sponsors and facilitates scientific research that benefits coastal communities and provides numerous recreational and educational activities to the public. Our activities include summer camp, kids programs, kayaking, birding, and even a 5k! The BHI Conservancy campus is home to a variety of animals, displays, and of course our gift shop, Turtle Central. Although the Conservancy maintains the sea turtle protection program on the island, please note that it is not a sea turtle hospital and we do not keep sea turtles at the campus.
The Bald Head Island Conservancy is a non-profit organization that was founded in 1983. The Conservancy's mission is fostering community based barrier island conservation, preservation and education. It is located in a unique area within the Smith Island Complex which includes Bald Head, Middle and Bluff Islands, all of which are bounded by the Cape Fear River and the Atlantic Ocean.
As a 501 (C-3) nonprofit membership organization, we are able to continue this work through the generosity and commitment of our many members, island visitors and other supporters. Please know that your support of our work is greatly appreciated!
